By where it hurts
What we look at, by where it hurts
Four patterns cover most of what walks into a sports podiatry room. Find yours.
Heel pain
The first steps out of bed hurt, it eases as you warm up, then it comes back after the run. We assess your gait, your calf and ankle range, and the shoes you train in, then treat the tissue and change the load. Strapping, shockwave therapy and laser therapy are available here where they are clinically appropriate.
Shin pain
An ache along the front or inside edge of the shin that arrives earlier in each run. We look at how much load your shin is taking on each step, your footwear, and how fast the training has ramped, and we build back from there.
Achilles pain
Stiff for the first ten minutes of the morning, sore pushing off, worse on hills and speed work. We assess the tendon's tolerance and how your foot and ankle behave under it, then load it deliberately rather than resting it and hoping.
Outside of the knee
It bites in the last few kilometres and eases when you stop. Often the foot, hip and cadence side of it is what has changed, so that is what we measure.
If yours is not on that list, it is still worth an appointment. The assessment is the same 30 minutes and it starts with watching you move.
$0 gap with eligible cover, otherwise $99.
The assessment
What the running assessment involves
30 minutes
In order, in the room
- 01Your history, properly. What you run, how much, on what, in which shoes, and when the pain arrived. Bring the worn out pair, because the wear pattern is data.
- 02Gait assessment. We watch you move and load, at the speed the pain shows up.
- 033D foot scan. The scan is the record any orthotic is prescribed from, and it is on screen for you to see.
- 04Hands on treatment,in the same appointment, where it is appropriate.
- 05A recovery plan for the next few weeks. What to change, what to keep, and when to check in.
What to bring
Thirty minutes goes quickly. These make it worth more.
The shoes you train in now, plus the pair you wore out
Any scans or reports
Kit you can move in
The two or three questions you want answered
The wear pattern on an old shoe is evidence.

Where it is clinically appropriate, VALD performance testing, shockwave therapy or laser therapy may also be part of it. David will tell you in the room whether any of those apply to you.
30 minutes. Bring your running shoes.
Orthotics
Do you need orthotics?
Only when they earn their place.
Sometimes the answer is no, and that is a real answer. Shoes, load and strength move most running problems. When your foot needs support that footwear cannot give it, we prescribe from the 3D scan taken at your assessment rather than from a shelf.
Read Custom orthotics in Sydney for how the prescription works and what it is used for.
What they fix, and when they are not the answer.

Before you book
Questions runners ask
Will I have to stop running?
Not automatically, and David will not know until he has watched you move. Often the training changes shape, in volume, surface, cadence or shoes, rather than stopping. That decision is made at your appointment with your gait assessment in front of us, not on a website.
How much does a running assessment cost?
$0 gap with eligible private health cover, or $99 without cover, for the 30 minute new patient appointment that includes the gait assessment and the 3D foot scan. New patients only. No referral needed. Ask us about follow-up fees when you call.
Do I need a referral or a scan first?
No referral. If you already have imaging or a report, bring it, because it saves repeating the story. If you do not, we start with the assessment.
Do you do gait analysis, or just look at my feet?
The 30 minute appointment includes a gait assessment, so we watch how you actually move and load, and a 3D scan of your feet. Both are part of the first appointment, not an extra.
What should I bring?
The shoes you train in now, plus the pair you wore out. Any scans or reports. Kit you can move in, and the two or three questions you want answered before you leave.
How soon can I be seen?
The booking page shows our live diary for Redfern, so what you see there is what is genuinely available. We are open until 7pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. If nothing suits, call (02) 7252 4590.
